After having the privilege of photographing this cutie, I posted the following on my blog:

«Does location matter when it comes to a photography session? What is it regarding location that makes for a good or bad backdrop? Is the place special to the client? Does it look cool (as perceived by the client). Can a good photographer make do with any location an get something the client will be pleased with. I personally find the subject way more important than where we are going. Give me a junk yard, give me a street, let’s play and see what we get. More important than location, I am wondering about the light. Does the location have good light? Is it really dark? Is there natural light which comes into the venue? Don’t make the mistake of checking the light at the time and season of the actual shoot. This image is of a cutie I had the privilege to photograph today. Can you tell where we were? Does it matter?»

Why I use a Leica:

My Uncle was a Leica shooter in the 50s and 60s. He passed away in the 80s and my aunt recently gave me his equipment. So I started to explore with Leica this year. I bought an M9 and hopefully get it soon, but for now I am using an 8.2.

My focus is typically people. The Leica rangefinder seems to be taking me back to my roots. The manual set up forces me to think about each and every shot, not just popping off a good many and selecting the best. The compositions feel different since you are not looking through the lens, but I like it. I also shoot Hasselblad, Mamiya and Canon but prefer my Leica for it’s light weight and how compact it is. I usually grab the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, but the other lenses do have their place.

I would call this a classic Leica portrait. While the subject herself is a beauty that probably can make any photo look great, there is something about the lighting in this image I really adore. It balances on the edge out burnt out in the lightest areas, yet this actually adds to the quality of the picture.

    An instant favorite!
