Leica M7 Hermès Edition

Leica M7 Hermès Edition

Yesterday, Leica Camera AG announced a (very) limited edition of the Leica M7, the last 35mm film rangefinder before Leica entered the digital market. Made in conjunction with fashion label Hermès, it’s being produced in two colors, orange and etoupe leather, and will be available in just 100 of each colour.

The camera will be fitted with a silver anodised Leica Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. The icing on the cake is a real leather carrying strap, handcrafted by Atelier Hermès to match the colour of each camera.

The price seems a staggering £8,550, or approximately $14.000, but is it really overly expensive?

The Leica M7 has a £3000 price tag in it’s “basic edition”, and the lens goes for £2800. The included Leicavit rapid winder costs £700 and a carrying strap sets you back about £70. The total, for the same pack but without the Hermès leather is £6570. About £2000 cheaper than the Hermès limited edition.

So, is the leather supplied by one of the most prestigious fashion labels in the world really worth a £2000 premium? That is up to you, really. We’re sure the 200 limited editions will fly off the shelfs. Because if you have one in orange that matches your Birkin, you may want the other one to match your etoupe Kelly as well.

That orange color is sweet! So much for being unobtrusive…I could be less conspicuous behind a Graflex! ;-)

    OMG not again!

I had truly hoped that the dark days of perfectly good M cameras being defiled by this tasteless corporate juggernaut of alleged “fashion” had faded into nothing more than a disturbing and forgettable lapse of judgement on Leica’s part.

Not so – here is a perfectly good M7 that has been ruined by slathering it in the same butt ugly shade of orange Naugahide that a Times Square pimp would package his $100 whores in and priced like one of Eliot Spitzer’s mounts.

Just when we thought we were at long last rid of the ugliness of Herems, it shows up again.

Perhaps it sbould be named the Herpes M7 – and the kit should most certainly include an airsickness bag.

I think I’ll pass on this one. Got my eye on a luxury yacht instead. ;-)

The orange Hermes M7 looks strikingly good. The MP Hermes was one of the nicest special editions ever. I don’t understand the hate people have toward the special editions. The Safari and White editions were particularly nice. The Millennium M6 in black paint was far nicer than a black chrome M6. The M6J was beautiful. The MP hammertone was attractive. Why do people hate style?

    Hmmmm….
You should consider “a la carte” one, because they modified many things, including engravery and screws, I had another calculation bringing to :

M7 “à la carte” : chrome, classic logo engravery, MP screaws, Box Veal leather : 4420€ (3949GBP)
    Leicavit :
    899€ (803GBP)
    Lens :
    3350€ (2993 GBP)
    Total :
    8869€ (7745 GBP)

    Hermès price :
    9500€ (8550 GBP)

Not such a big difference though !
