I shot this during an evening out with some friends of mine. It was a themed party, many people showed up all dressed for the occasion in early 20th century style clothing (think pre WWII).
At one point there was an act on the stage and while everybody was watching, I noticed this girl sitting by the side of the room. She was in her own little world it almost seemed, illuminated by one of the few lights that were switched on. I quickly grabbed a shot and I knew I would be very happy with it. Turns out it is now one of my favorite shots.
The techie bit: shot with an early Leica M6 with a Voigtlander 35mm Nokton f/1.2 wide open. Film is Ilford Delta 400 pushed 2 stops.
Why I use a Leica:
I’m a product designer by trade, so working with visuals is my bread and butter. But somehow I only started discovering photography until a couple of years ago. I started out with a Canon Powershot G5, at the time a pretty decent camera and it enabled me to discover that there was life after the Auto settings button. When I had the chance to visit Japan a year or so ago I pushed myself to get a dSLR and that’s when the madness started. Soon I ended up with a couple of zooms, primes and a very very heavy backpack as a result. A couple of things happened shortly after one another though, I got familiar with Leica after reading a review for the M8 on dpreview. Shortly after I discovered the street photography work from Chris Weeks and oddly that’s how I found out about the famous Leica heritage and frontrunners like Henri Cartier-Bresson. From that moment on I got totally captivated, to be able to live comfortably with a camera that you can carry everyday, yet being able to capture the most wonderful images with such gorgeous lenses.. it was just too good to ignore. I sold all my digital stuff and now I switch between my M6 and Hasselblad depending on my mood. I have the feeling that it’s one of the best choices I’ve made so far!
