QuoteThis picture was taken from the window of my office at the backyard of a shipyard. I love watching people working and in what they are doing. It was a misty day and I noticed those 2 guys working on the pontoons in the background. I got the feeling that I had to capture this scene. It looks a bit like a painting…

This picture was captured with a M8 and a Voigtlander Ultron 35mm.

Why I use a Leica:
I lived in Germany as a consultant for more than 10 years, and the reason why I use a Leica M is the connection it has with the country I lived once. Apart from that, I love the compactness and lightness of this camera. It can be put into a jacket pocket easily.

Jos Runarka lives and works in the Netherlands. More M8 photos can be found at his photo blog inalux.wordpress.com.

The M8 is great. Excellent BW. Fabulous composition.

  7. Lainer says:

Even though the cameras are made in Portugal for the past 30 yrs? I just read that somewhere.

    • LeicaShots says:

@Lainer: The Leica cameras and lenses are manufactured in Solms (and earlier in Wetzlar), Germany.

(Although some models were made in Canada, up to the 1980s(?))

    • Carl Merkin says:

That is quite wrong! Some, but not all LEICA-R cameras were made in Portugal 30 years ago. LEICA-M cameras are made at SOLMS, GERMANY.
I read “somewhere” that LEICA went out of business 15 years ago. LOL! So much for “somewhere”!

      • LeicaShots says:

I did not know that about the R cameras, Carl. Must have been reading mostly about the M cameras ;) Thanks for setting us straight! :)

    • Jos Runarko says:

Yes I hear about that. Some parts of the Leica products was or still manufactured in Portuga. I have no problem with it. It is a german design anyway :-D and a very good one too!

But to me the important thing is the eye and mindset of the photographer…

  8. Carl Merkin says:

A painterly image. Very thought provoking!

  9. Jos,

That is a remarkable image. Beautifully composed.

    Leicashots:

Actually much of Leica’s camera production STILL comes from Portugal. According to the following link, 90% of it. Final assembly and testing occurs in Solms and hence the “Made in Germany” engraving.

It doesn’t matter to me as I know that the Portuguese do great work. As a Portuguese person and a Canadian citizen, I often thought about getting a Portuguese-made Leica R with a Canadian-made lens. It would a personification of myself – a Portuguese body with Canadian vision. :-)

Thanks for all of you. Yes, this image I think is a meaningful one, since the connection with what I do with my colleagues: building the best mega yacht in the world! There are a series images I made about it. It is the story of them, behind the glamorous end product that most people see in Monaco or jet set location all over the world. The effort they did to deliver a perfect product to the client…
