QuoteTo me, it is a really “Leica” shot in the classic sense. It is a slice of life that I feel has much ambiguity and mystery to it. Why is this boy carrying the younger child? Where are they going? It reminds me so much of the Hollies song, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”. I really like the way the children occupy the space within the frame, plus the fact that it has such an awesome and atmospheric backdrop, Monument Valley in the USA.

It was taken in June, 2009. I used my M6 TTL with 35mm Summicron lens, on Agfapan 400 film. I used that camera/lens combination a lot during my month-long trip to the USA (along with my R8), and I doubt the picture would have been taken if I’d had any other camera with me. The M6 was there and ready, and I was able to quickly frame the shot and press the button in one movement.

Why I use a Leica:
I have only been a Leica user since February 2009, having long felt that I would like to see what all the fuss is about. Straight away, I realized that the lenses are far and away superior to any other that I’ve used in 35mm. But the thing that keeps impressing me is the way that the camera works ergonomically – it is extremely intuitive and has such a reassuring feel of quality. It has given me a new incentive to use film, and breathed new life into my creative impulses.

Philip Wright lives in Melbourne, Australia and enjoys photographing wherever he goes. His work can be viewed on Zenfolio.
