QuoteI don’t remember shooting this picture myself.

I don’t usually shoot less fortunate people on the street. I often find it uncomfortable viewing one from the net. In the very busy street of Hong Kong and just outside the exit of subway train, I saw this old man asking for give-away with a tiny blue plastic bucket. Not much attention was paid to him by the pedestrians. He seemed to be intrigued by what I was trying to do and looked up.

I like the fact that the picture shows a tiny part of the blue bucket which is enough to tell what it is but not enough (hopefully) to hurt anyone’s feeling.

The photo was taken with RVP 50 in an MP3 and a 35mm Summicron (1st version). Many would argue that the harsh contrast of RVP film would not exactly compliment the low contrast nature of the old Leica lenses. But I still find the outcome amazing. The Canadian version of the lens gives an obviously warmer tone than the German counterpart.

Why I use a Leica:
Street photography. Ever since I started to shoot with a Leica M, I liked to shoot off-finder. Leica’s design on the M body and the range scale of the lens make it easy for people to shoot off-finder. Usually with a 35mm lens, setting to f4 with a shutter speed not slower than 1/125 sec will often do a great job in giving nice surprises. And Leica’s discrete appearance is best for shooting in the street.

Eric Lee lives and works in Hong Kong. Check out his Flickr photostream for more Leica shots.
