Last year, 2009, I was on holiday in Nice, South of France. It was a wet day and while my much better half was of shopping I wandered around Nice Old Town. Since it was wet I stood in from the rain, camera in hand and just waited to see who or what came up and down the steps in the shot. Sometimes you just get lucky with a composition and this was one of those times. The image could be from any decade and as such is one of my favourite shots that I use as a standard to compare my other work too. Taken on my second hand classic M6 with a 35mm Summicron on Ilford Delta 3200.
I live and shoot in Belfast, Northern Ireland and after a brief encounter with the world of digital photography I returned to my passion for using film and darkroom printing. I’ve only been shooting for about 20 years now so still a bit of a rooky compared with some.
Why I use a Leica:
I use the M6 because it’s compact and it doesn’t draw the same sort of attention a medium format camera or my AF Nikon SLR with zoom lens does. I find it quick to focus and stupidly simple to adjust. The lack of bells and whistles is it’s greatest asset, and the build quality is second to none. My most prized possession.

Very nice timing, Paul. The battered umbrella and cloud-like swirls of the background are particularly attractive points.
A timeless shot. Great moment captured. Great tones.
While it’s so perfect right now, panning, or cropping, a bit to the right may help getting rid of the two semi-rounded objects from the staircase. But hey, I could have missed the precious moment minding all these tedious stuff.
This is the kind of shot I would always come back to.
